Momentum Sports offers After-School and Summer Programs for aspiring athletes interested in Mountain Biking, Urban Cycling, Skiing & Snowboarding, Water Sports and more. Beginners all the way up to experts are welcome and athletes can participate in these sports at both the recreational and competitive levels. We also offer equipment sales, rentals, and repair services for Momentum athletes.
All programs operate out of our facility in the Ravenna/Bryant neighborhood of Northeast Seattle (http://wunderkindseattle.com) which serves as the drop-off/pick-up location and a general event space for social gatherings.
We’ve adopted a unique philosophy, utilize an effective operational model, and employ a dedicated leadership philosophy to differentiate ourselves. You can learn more about us and our approach below.
We adopted the Momentum philosophy from two of the most successful groups in sports history: The Bones Brigade skateboard team from the 1980’s and The Momentum Generation surf group from the 1990s. If you’re into documentaries, we encourage you to watch the films about these two groups of kids who are responsible for elevating their respective sports to levels no one could’ve imagined. It’s a great illustration of what can be achieved when individuals with an undying passion for a sport and a burning competitive drive get together and are put in environments to feed their appetites to improve and advance their skill and ability. We strive to emulate this approach with the sports and activities we offer by providing our athletes access to the amazing natural resources and terrain at our disposal (mountains, trails, water, and more) and then feeding their appetite to progress their skill sets. We employ a practical, learn-by-doing approach by getting in as many runs and repetitions as possible and let our groups push and feed off one another. We provide guidance and direction when necessary, but err on the side of more pedaling, more riding, more sliding and less talking and watching. Novices and beginners get a little closer guidance and direction, while more experienced and advanced athletes are given a little more freedom to explore terrain on their own, but we’re usually within eyeshot or earshot of all our athletes. We’re on the trails with them, riding the lifts with them, or in the water with them.
The fireteam operational model was first developed in Germany in the early 1900’s and has been advanced and perfected by the U.S. military over the last 100 years. It’s based on the notion that SMALLER groups are much more effective and productive than larger ones, and this is the model we follow. If we’re heading to the hills for mountain biking or skiing/snowboarding, we’re limited to 10 passengers in the back of each of our two vans. Once at our destination, we’ll break into smaller groups of 2 – 6 per group. We’re either in close proximity to these groups as we head down the trails or slopes with them or are in radio communication via walkie talkie with a group lead who is a more experienced athlete and familiar with our programs and the terrain.
The word “WE” refers to the founders, owners, and operators of Momentum Sports and Wunderkind: Shannon and Nick Barrett. We started this in 2014 and are the coaches, van drivers, mechanics, accountants, marketing, sales, customer service, and even janitorial staff. We have no employees or staff and do everything ourselves. First and foremost, we’re proud parents of two boys (ages 15 and 12 as of March '24), small business owners of 10 years and counting, and before that worked in the corporate world for 15 years for Fortune 500 companies as well as startups in various capacities and roles including leadership, marketing, sales, operations, and technology development.

Since we spend the majority of our time outside and on the move with our programs, we’re not usually able to answer phone calls or respond to emails to address more detailed questions. We know there may be several questions and topics not covered on our website, but there should be enough information for you to determine whether we’re a fit for what you’re looking for and look forward to having you join us!
